GLP-1 medications were originally developed for Type 2 diabetes — and they remain highly effective for blood sugar management alongside their weight loss benefits. If you have both obesity and Type 2 diabetes, understanding the dual benefit is important for choosing the right treatment.
The dual benefit
GLP-1 medications improve blood sugar control through multiple mechanisms: they enhance glucose-dependent insulin secretion (your body produces more insulin when blood sugar is high, but not when it's normal — reducing hypoglycaemia risk), suppress glucagon release (reducing how much sugar your liver puts into the blood), and slow gastric emptying (reducing blood sugar spikes after meals). The weight loss itself also improves insulin sensitivity, creating a virtuous cycle.1
Which medications are licensed for both?
Mounjaro (tirzepatide): Licensed in the UK for both weight management and Type 2 diabetes. This makes it a particularly attractive option for people with both conditions — one medication addressing both.1
Ozempic (semaglutide): Licensed for Type 2 diabetes but not weight loss. Available on NHS prescription for diabetes management.2
Wegovy (semaglutide): Licensed for weight management but not specifically for diabetes (though it improves blood sugar as a co-benefit).3
Diabetes remission
In clinical trials, a significant proportion of participants with Type 2 diabetes achieved normal blood sugar levels (HbA1c below 6.5%) while on tirzepatide — effectively putting their diabetes into remission while on treatment. However, blood sugar typically rises again after stopping medication, consistent with the weight regain data.
Important considerations
If you're already taking diabetes medications (particularly insulin or sulfonylureas), adding a GLP-1 medication increases the risk of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar). Your prescriber will likely need to reduce your other diabetes medication doses when starting a GLP-1. Never adjust diabetes medications yourself — always do this under clinical guidance.
