Hard, Fast, Short Cardio for Faster Weight Loss!

interval training

If you’ve been paying any sort of attention lately, you’ve heard a lot about high intensity interval training. You’ve probably heard that, by alternating short bursts of high intensity exercise with periods of low intensity recovery, you can achieve some pretty incredible health and fitness goals. You’ve probably also heard that this kind of training blows the doors off of traditional long, slow distance type workouts.

The Benefits of Interval Training

And, if you’re like me, you’ve seen the laundry list of these benefits. Benefits you can’t get from traditional long, slow cardio. To recap:

* Interval training can decrease the risk of heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure and the onset of diabetes * Interval training can burn more fat than traditional cardio – even burning fat up to 24 hours after the end of your exercise session

* Interval training has been shown to be the best type of exercise to reduce belly fat – a leading indicator in the development of metabolic syndrome

* Interval training can teach your body to burn fat first during activity

* Interval training can add lean muscle to your frame – muscle that boosts your metabolism, helping you burn more calories

* Interval training can help increase the release of Human Growth Hormone – the essential substance in building and repairing muscle, keeping bones healthy and burning fat naturally

Why Doesn’t Everyone Interval Train?

“With all of these benefits”, you might ask, “Why hasn’t everyone jumped on interval training as their main method of exercise?”

The main reason for most people is this – they’re afraid of getting hurt. It is true that you must be a little careful in switching to high intensity training. You must build up gradually so that you don’t risk getting hurt. It’s difficult to just jump right into high intensity training.

I ran into this issue myself when I tried to get back into interval training in my mid-30’s. I tried to go back to the workouts I had done 10 or 15 years earlier – and I paid a price.

The method I tried to use involved running sprints at the local high school track. And it worked in that I felt better, had more energy and dropped some serious fat. But, trying to be a little too gung ho, I forgot that my body hadn’t moved this way in a long time. As a result, I started to run into problems like pulled hamstrings, strained calf muscles and sore Achilles tendons…

The Safest Interval Training Method

That’s when I started to look around for a better way to run my intervals. And what I found worked wonders.

I decided to go back to basics. To go back to a workout that I had used in high school (and seen plenty of elite athletes incorporate into their training). The answer that I found to making interval training safer was: the hill sprint.

The only change I made to my interval training was to take it to a hill instead of sprinting on a flat. The difference was dramatic.

Less Chance of Injury

First of all, running intervals on an incline made all of my little nagging muscle pulls and tweaks disappear. I was able to train at a high intensity without having to worry about injury.

One reason for this is that sprinting on an incline decreases the impact that running has on your body. Flat surface sprinting can place a lot of pounding on your back, knees and shins. Hill sprints alleviate most of this high impact punishment. Studies have shown that adding even a slight incline to your running decreased the impact on your lower legs by as much as 26%.

Interval training on hills is also safer for your hamstrings – one of the most commonly seen sites of injury when increasing the intensity of your workouts. Because your stride is shortened slightly when going up hill, you tend not to over-stride and pull with your hamstrings. Instead, you plant closer under your center of gravity, changing the focus to your “pushing” leg muscles. This means you can run fast, and have less of a chance of pulling the old hamstrings.

Get Results Faster

The second reason that hill sprinting is a great way to interval train is that it’s an easy way to increase the intensity of your workout, no matter what your current level of fitness is. Just by going up a hill (or stairs, or bleachers), the intensity of your workout is automatically increased. If you currently walk, walking uphill will be “high” intensity. If you can sprint, sprinting uphill will raise the intensity even further. And if you are somewhere in between, the hill will provide the same benefits.

All of this means that you can instantly do interval training. You don’t have to work up as gradually as you would doing flat sprints. Your progression from walking to sprinting can be done in less time.

Get More Done in Less Time

Finally, using hills for interval training can decrease the length of your workouts. Again, because the incline raises the intensity, it is not necessary to go as far or as long as you would with flat surface intervals. Give them a try and you’ll be surprised how fast you are “huffing and puffing” as recommended for maximum health benefits.

If you’ve been putting off the start of your interval training because you don’t want to get hurt, I’ve just given you a solution to your problem. Taking your intervals to the hills, stairs or bleachers will allow you to start RIGHT NOW. This training can be safer than flat intervals and just as effective. In fact, potentially even more effective in a given period of time.

No more excuses. Time for you to get results.

In a long-term study of the health of the people of in the United States, the U.S. Public Health Service documented the chances of developing heart disease among various groups in the population. Long before the any symptoms appeared, epidemiological research could identify high-risk groups.

Among the highest risk factors are male sex, age over 35, cigarette smoking, high blood pressure, high levels of certain blood fats, and a family history of cardiovascular disorders.

Other researchers have added to this list another risk factor: the compulsive, hard-driving, highly anxious personality. The greater the number of severity, the greater the person?overall risk.

These threats to the heart can be divided into two main categories: those beyond individual control, such as age, sex, and heredity, and those that can be controlled, avoided, or even eliminated. Among those in the second category are what cardiologists call it the triple threat. These are the high blood pressure, cigarette smoking, and high cholesterol levels in the blood.

If you smoke a pack of cigarettes a day, your risk of having a heart attack is twice that of a nonsmoker. If you smoke, have hypertension, and eat a diet high in fats without any exercise at all, your risk is five times greater than normal.

The Healthy Heart

If these risk factors endanger the heart is health, what enhances its well-being and improves its odds of working long and well?

Obviously, quitting cigarettes and eating a low-fat diet will help. The next best thing you can do for your heart is to give it what it needs: regular exercise or a complete cardio interval training.

The heart is a muscle, or, more accurately, a group or package of muscles, similar in many ways to the muscles of the arms and legs. And just as exercise strengthens and improves limb muscles, it enhances the health of the heart muscles as well.

Since World War II, several large-scale statistical studies have evaluated the relationship between physical activity and cardiovascular disease. One well-known survey compared 31,000 drivers and conductors of some bus companies. The more sedentary drivers had a significantly higher rate of heart disease than the conductors, who walked around the buses and climbed stairs to the upper level.

The why and how behind these statistics were not explained by classic experiments with dogs whose coronary arteries were surgically narrowed to resemble those of humans with arteriosclerosis. Dogs who were exercised had much better blood flow than those kept inactive.

The exercise seemed to stimulate the development of new connections between the impaired and the nearly normal blood vessels, so exercised dogs had a better blood supply to all the muscle tissue of the heart. The human heart reacts in the same way to provide blood to the portion that was damaged by the heart attack.

To enable the damaged heart muscle to heal, the heart relies on new small blood vessels for what is called collateral circulation. These new branches on the arterial tress can develop long before a heart attack ?d can prevent a heart attack if the new network takes on enough of the function of the narrowed vessels.

With all these facts, it is now boiled down to a single question: What should be done in order to prevent such dilemmas?

Some studies showed that moderate exercise several times a week is more effective in building up these auxiliary pathways than extremely vigorous exercise done twice often.

The general rule is that exercise helps reduce the risk of harm to the heart. Some researches further attested the link between exercise and healthy heart based from the findings that the non-exercisers had a 49% greater risk of heart attack than the other people included in the study. The study attributed a third of that risk to sedentary lifestyle alone.

Hence, with employing the cardio interval training, you can absolutely expect positive results not only on areas that concerns your cardiovascular system but on the overall status of your health as well.

This particular activity that is definitely good for the heart is a cycle of ?peated segments?hat is of intense nature. In this process, there is an interchange periods of recuperation. It can both be comprehensive activity and moderate motion.

Consequently, the benefits of merely engaging into this kind of activity can bring you more results that you have ever expected. These are:

1. The threats of heart attack are lessened, if not eliminated

2. Enhanced heart task

3. Increase metabolism, increase the chance of burning calories, therefore, assist you in losing weight

4. Improves lung capacity

5. Helps lessen or eliminate the cases of stress

Indeed, cardio interval training is the modern way of creating a healthy, happy heart and body.

What is the Best Type of Interval Training to Burn Fat?

interval training

Over the past decade the popularity of interval training for fat loss and performance improvements has been amazing. There have been so many studies investigating the fat loss and performance benefits of using intervals versus long boring cardio – and the results truly speak for themselves.

But as with any type of training, your body will adapt to how it is trained, and different energy systems will be used depending on the intensity and duration of the exercise. For instance, a 400m sprinter might run intervals lasting up to 60 seconds and then recovering for 3 minutes because that type of training would most closely resemble what he/she would be going through in a race.

And in reality there are literally thousands of different interval training protocols to follow depending on your goal and fitness level.

But what about the average person who doesn’t want to train for track and field or a particular sport and is solely concerned with burning fat? Is there an interval training protocol that is best to maximize fat loss?

Some people recommend long duration intervals (ie. 1 minute hard, 2 minutes recovery) while others recommend shorter duration intervals that can elicit a much harder effort.

So the answer to the interval training for fat loss question is yes – but it isn’t what you think.

Here’s why…

Research published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology compared the fat-burning effects of two different interval training workouts, both lasting 40 minutes.

The first consisted of short intervals lasting 6 seconds, with 9-second rest periods. The second workout involved long intervals lasting 24 seconds, with 36-second rest periods.

It’s important to note that the treadmill speed was identical during both the short and long interval workouts. Moreover, the ratio between work and recovery bouts was also the same (ie. 2:3 work to rest), meaning that the total amount of time spent running on the treadmill (16 minutes) was also identical.

Despite the fact that exercise intensity and duration were kept constant during both trials, there were large differences in fat oxidation.

In fact, the number of fat calories burned was approximately 3 times LOWER during the long (24 seconds) interval workout.

To understand why the short intervals were so much more effective at increasing fat oxidation, it’s important to understand a little more about a substance called myoglobin.

The mysterious myoglobin

Myoglobin is a large protein that binds to oxygen inside your muscle cells. Think of it a little like a “reserve” oxygen supply. As the blood has hemoglobin, the muscles have myoglobin. Both store oxygen.

According to physiologist Olof Astrand, myoglobin is repeatedly used and reloaded during the work and recovery phases of interval exercise.

However, as the duration of the work period increases, myoglobin’s oxygen stores are reduced.

Your body needs more oxygen to burn fat as a fuel (compared to carbohydrate or protein). When oxygen supplies become limited, carbohydrates then provide a greater proportion of energy. This is also seen in the “crossover effect” where carbohydrates become the more dominant source of fuel at higher exercise intensities compared to fats which are mainly oxidized at lower intensities.

And furthermore, because lactic acid, a by-product of carbohydrate metabolism, “blocks” fat burning, intense intervals that continue beyond the point at which myoglobin loses its supply of oxygen (usually above 15 seconds or so) rely to a greater extent on carbohydrate as a source of energy and, thus, don’t burn as much fat as shorter intervals.

As mentioned, because myoglobin holds enough oxygen to last for 5-15 seconds it would make send to perform short, intense rather than long intervals to promote a greater rise in fat oxidation.

As such, if your goal is to lose fat, then limit your work intervals to a maximum of 15 seconds.

Studies also show that shorter intervals don’t feel as physically demanding as long intervals which means that you can get better results without feeling like you’re working harder.

How much rest should you take between work bouts?

This depends on the duration of the work intervals and your fitness level. The longer the work interval, the more myoglobin gets used up, and the longer it takes to “reload”. Therefore, you’d need more time to recover.

The study alluded to earlier used rest intervals that were 1.5 times greater than the work intervals (6 seconds work: 9 seconds rest).

Based on these findings, a 15-second work interval would require a minimum of 22 seconds rest.

However, if you’re new to interval training I would recommend starting with a work-to-rest ratio of 1:3. This means that if you work hard for 15 seconds, give yourself 45 seconds to recover. As you become fitter, then you can reduce the amount of recovery.

Fat Loss Circuit Training Workout

circuit training

Today I’d like to give you an exciting full body workout that will burn tons of calories and leave you feeling great in just 40 minutes. So if you want to burn fat, tone up, and get fit then this workout is for you.

Another great advantage of this workout is that all you need to complete it is a set of dumbbells, a stability ball, and a step. A cardio machine is advised for your interval training component.

The fat burning workout I’m about to provide you with is an example of the type of circuit training workouts that are a key component of my Fitter U™ fat loss fitness program.

So here’s how it’s going to work. We’re going to take 6 exercises and set them up in a circuit training routine. For each exercise you will be completing as many repetitions as possible in a 30 second time period. After each exercise you will then rest for 30 seconds before moving on to the next one. Once you’ve completed the entire first set you can then grab a sip of water and rest for 1-2 minutes.

After your 1-2 minute rest period, you will then choose a cardio machine and perform 5 minutes of intervals. The interval training component is a great way to spike your metabolism and burn further calories in just a few minutes. For these intervals you will be working hard for 10 seconds and recovering for 50 seconds. This will be repeated 5 times for a total of 5 minutes.

For instance, if you are on the bike you would pedal as fast as possible (at a good resistance) for 10 seconds and then follow that with a nice and easy 50 second recovery. Got it? Awesome!

Both the circuit training and interval training sequences are repeated twice.

So here’s how the workout structure will look:

Warm-up

5 minutes light cardio

CIRCUIT 1 (30 sec. work, 30 sec. rest)

Standing lunges Plank Step-ups with biceps curls and shoulder press Push-ups Stability ball crunches Ball squats (against wall) with biceps curls

Rest 1-2 minutes

INTERVAL TRAINING 1 (10 sec. hard, 50 sec. recovery)

Rest 1-2 minutes

CIRCUIT 2 (30 sec. work, 30 sec. rest)

Standing lunges Plank Step-ups with biceps curls and shoulder press Push-ups Stability ball crunches Ball squats (against wall) with biceps curls

Rest 1-2 minutes

INTERVAL TRAINING 2 (10 sec. hard, 50 sec. recovery)

This entire workout should take you no more than 40 minutes.

Give it a shot and experience the Fitter U™ difference.

A Synergistic Approach for Natural Weight Loss Success

natural weight loss

While it is tempting to believe that a magic pill or potion is all that you need to achieve natural weight loss, the hard truth is that losing weight is just not that simple in most cases. For the vast majority of people, a combination of exercise, changes in eating habits, and perhaps the use of appropriate natural weight loss aids will be needed in order to lose weight long-term.

There are many natural weight loss products available and additional ones come out all the time. Each promises to be nearly miraculous in it’s effects and people buy the latest and greatest weight loss aid with eager anticipation, hoping that it will finally be the answer to their weight problems. They want to believe that a pill, or a patch, or a tea, etc.. will be all they need to lose weight and that diet and exercise won’t be necessary (because dieting and exercising are difficult). Even though deep down they probably know that the latest weight loss miracle being hyped is no better than all the things they’ve tried before, they want to believe it will work, and so they buy it, only to be disappointed again.

Now this is not to say that natural weight loss aids are all completely worthless. The truth is, a lot of weight loss aids actually have the effects that their prooters claim. For example, hoodia gordonii (at least the real stuff) does seem to be a very effective appetite suppressant. So, if the main reason that you have trouble losing weight is because you have out of control hunger that makes you eat excssively, hoodia may be a big help. The problem is that most people are not overeating out of actual hunger. They may eat out of boredom, out of habit, out of a need to satisfy a craving, or out of a need to soothe some emotional issue they are dealing with, but they don’t eat out of hunger. Hoodia is not going to help you if you aren’t eating out of hunger.

Other natural weight loss aids may work by increasing the metabolic effects of diet and exercise. It kind of stands to reason that if you fail to incorporate diet and exercise the effects of these products will be pretty minor.

Some natural weight loss aids block the absorption of fat by the digestive tract and thereby lower the calories you absorb from each meal. While this does tend to help with weight loss, unless you stop eating everything except fat (which is not a good idea), you still are taking in other calories that, in excess, will be converted to fat AFTER they are absorbed from the digestive tract. For optimum results, again we see that a good eating plan and exercise are necessary.

At this point, you may have guessed that one of the primary points I am trying to make is that lsting natural weight loss, absolutely requires a healthy eating plan and regular exercise. No weight loss aid, natural or otherwise will by itself make you lose weight and keep it off. In fact, the ads for weight loss aids will usually state this very thing, even though it is in microscopic print at the bottom of the ad.

What it comes down to is that natural weight loss is built on a foundation of sensible diet and exercise. With a good diet and exercise program in place, you may get additional benefits from using one or more of the natural weight loss products on the market. But do your research to find a product that serves your particular needs. In other words, if you’re not overeating out of hunger, don’t buy an appetite suppressant. If you’re already minimizing your fat intake, don’t waste your money on a fat blocker.

Now, once you have your weight loss plan in place with your diet, exercise program, and whatever natural weight loss aids you choose to use, there’s one little thing that needs to happen for you to successfully lose weight. You have to stick to the program! If there’s one thing that renders the vast majority of natural weight loss efforts ineffective, it’s a lack of follow-through.

It has been my experience that very few people stick to a natural weight loss program consistently for more than two weeks at a time. Of course, some people may intermittently follow a weight loss program for months or years, but they get sidetracked over and over again and really are not consistent for more than one or two weeks in a row, so they never get any momentum and achieve their goals.

A new study that tested the relative effectiveness of several popular diet plans revealed a fascinating finding. The overall success rates of most of the currently popular diet programs were about the same. The success or failure of any given diet had little to do with what the approach was. In other words, low carb, low fat, calorie restriction, eating for blood type, etc., really didn’t matter. The thing that actually mattered was if the person consistently followed the program! To sum it up, it doesn’t matter so much what you do to lose weight (within reason), as much as it matters that you do it consistenty long-term!

To be able to stick to your natural weight loss program, it is critical that you take charge of your thoughts and emotions. A lot of different ways exist to get control over your own mind, and different ways have varying degrees of effectiveness from one person to the next. You can get a lot of help in this area with products from Anthony Robbins, Dr. Phil, and others, as well as through technologies like hypnosis, the Sedona Method and Emotional Freedom Technique. You may need to try several methods to find what works well for you.

Regardless of the approach you use, the true key to effective natural weight loss really has very little relationship to the hottest weight loss aid on the market, or the most recent diet book being promoted. The real secret is to choose a reasonable approach that includes diet, exercise (choose an exercise you are physically capable of doing – starting with advanced kickboxing if you’ve been a couch potato your whole life is not going to work!), and possibly one or more weight loss aids and then make that program a part of your daily life forever. And the way to make that happen is to take control of your mind and get your brain working with you rather than against you. Good luck!

Is The Atkins Method Right For You

atkins

The following article presents the very latest information on Atkins Method. If you have a particular interest in Atkins Diet, then this informative article is required reading.

See how much you can learn about Atkins Method when you take a little time to read a well-researched article? Don’t miss out on the rest of this great information.

Over the years, the Atkins plan has become synonymous with weight loss. Fans of the program say that it has proven to be instrumental in helping them to shed unwanted pounds. They talk of improved overall health and greater energy as a result of the Atkins program. However, critics maintain that Atkins could lead to heart damage, making it an unhealthy diet.

Supporters of Atkins say just about anyone can slim down using their program. However, there are certain people that are most likely to benefit from the Atkins plan. These include yo-yo dieters, who find themselves losing weight, only to gain it back again; dieters who feel constantly hungry; and those who eat for emotional reasons. Binge eaters and constant snackers can also benefit from the Atkins program. In addition, those who suffer from a food addiction are prime candidates for Atkins.

Atkins relies heavily on proteins and fats, along with carbohydrates that are rich in nutrients. The idea is to strictly reduce the amount of non-nutritious carbohydrates you consume. The theory behind this is that, when carbs are restricted, you end up burning fat rather than glucose. In addition, it has been shown that, all things being equal, you will lose more fat with Atkins than with other types of weight loss plans.

The Atkins plan is divided into four stages. During the initial stage, your body moves from burning carbohydrates to burning fats. You should also be able to kick the sugar habit during this stage. During the second stage, your weight loss will accelerate, but you will also be able to eat larger portions of vegetables. In the third stage, known as pre-maintenance, you will continue to add more foods to the mix. The final stage involves lifetime maintenance. During this phase, you can continue to fight food addictions, maintain your goal weight, and decrease the chance that you will suffer from diabetes.

However, it can be difficult to stick with the Atkins plan. This is because the temptation to eat carbohydrates and sweets is so great. Friends and relatives can become diet saboteurs, preventing you from achieving the results you’re looking for. In this case, the best defense is a good offense. This means telling your significant others in advance that you’re determined to complete the Atkins program. Inform them that you don’t want to even be offered French fries and potato chips.

The Journal of the American Medical Association has suggested that the Atkins plan can be dangerous for children. This is not surprising, considering that young people are still growing and need all the nutrients they can get, whether the vitamins and minerals are from carbohydrates or other sources. Supporters of Atkins say that, while children may not benefit from a restriction of vegetables and fruits, they could consume fewer potatoes and breads and still remain healthy.

Some medical experts say that the Atkins approach is not appropriate for people who already suffer from kidney or liver trouble. Also, because Atkins reduces the amount of fruits and vegetables an individual consumes, the diet can leave people at greater risk for such problems as cancer and heart disease. As a result, you should probably check with your family physician before resorting to the Atkins plan, or any other low-carb, high-protein diet.

It is likely that the Atkins plan will remain controversial for the foreseeable future. While it has been proven effective in helping people lose weight, it may also place individuals at a higher risk for serious diseases. A great deal of additional research needs to be conducted in order to determine if Atkins is a miracle cure or a medical nightmare. Once more studies are conducted, the long-term effects of Atkins on the human body may be easier to determine. If you are generally in good health and have a normal energy level, you might give Atkins a try. If, however, you suffer from any serious diseases, or are experiencing symptoms such as high blood pressure, you might consider an alternative diet plan. In the end, you, in consultation with your doctor, will have to determine the diet program that’s appropriate in your particular case.

The day will come when you can use something you read about here to have a beneficial impact. Then you’ll be glad you took the time to learn more about carbohydrates.

Probiotics Are They Friend Or Foe

probiotics

You may have heard the term Probiotic from friends and family but never knew what it was. In this article we will discuss good bacteria and its benefits to the body, who may need to supplement probiotics in their diet and where to find them. For those who have never heard of probiotics, this term is given to bacteria found in our intestinal tract also known as friendly bacteria.

The human gastrointestinal tract houses more than 400 different live beneficial bacteria. Among these good bacteria include L. acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum, the two most abundant friendly bacteria found in the gastrointestinal tract must keep balance with bad bacteria such as E.coli or your health starts to decline. If you suspect you have a problem in your GI tract, some of the health problems you may be experiencing are poor digestion, headaches, and intestinal yeast an overgrowth of the bacteria candida albacans which can make life unpleasant.

L. Acidophilus produces acidphilin, lactic acid, and hydrogen peroxide which together produce an antimicrobial agent in the GI tract which fight against foreign environmental borne pathogens. This effect also enhances the immune system as well as boost the digestion of foods, help alleviate digestive disorders, help prevent bad breath, enhance the synthesis (production) of B vitamins, help with calcium absorption, help as an anti-tumor and anti-cancer agent, help in the digestion of dairy products like milk, and fight against excess yeast growth such as candida.

The benefits of acidophilus, bifidus, and other probiotics to maintain proper GI health have been demonstrated by the scientific community for several years now. If your digestive system is in poor health, this poor GI condition can further reduce the levels of acidophilus and supplementation is required to restore your system to proper health.

If you have ever suffered from candida, you know with out a doubt that probiotic supplementation is a must. By supplementing with a good probiotic one can stop yeast over growth, boost the immune system, and rebuild their GI bacteria. The fastest way to destroy probiotics in the intestinal tract is by taking an antibiotic. In the past few years, doctors have been over prescribing antibiotics for every little sniffle and cold, even those with a yeast infection in the GI tract. Antibiotics are great for fighting bacteria and in some cases you just can not get around taking one; but the use of an antibiotic will destroy all the probiotics in your GI tract. Research has determined that 70% of your immune system resides in your intestinal tract, by taking an antibiotic you can knock out your immune system if you do not restore it with a good probiotic supplement. In North America, environmental toxins, food toxins, and a high stress life style can reduce the probiotic population in your GI tract as well. Note: if you are currently on an antibiotic do not take your probiotic at the same time that you take your prescribed antibiotic. The antibiotic will destroy the probiotic. Allow 2 – 3 hours between applications. If you consume your antibiotic at 12noon wait till 2pm or 3pm before taking your probiotic. This will help prevent the antibiotic from completely destroying all life in your intestinal tract.

There are several sources one can get probiotics from, by a food source or in supplement form found at your friendly health food store. Foods high in probiotic culture consist of natural cheeses, yogurt, kefir, and buttermilk. These are perhaps the best food sources for probiotics. Some other foods like wheat grass, spirulina, and chlorella are also rich in probiotics and are also packed with vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients that can boost the immune system and help detoxify the body. For those of you who are allergic to the list of foods first mentioned (dairy), an alternative to those food sources is a good enteric coated probiotic from your friendly health food store in capsule form. Whether you choose to eat foods high in probiotics or visit your friendly health food store, getting a daily infusion of probiotics can improve your health and quality of life.

Weight Loss Supplements: Just Because It’s Natural Doesn’t Always Mean It’s Safe

natural weight loss

There are a large number of natural weight loss aids on the market, but simply because a product may be “natural”, it doesn’t always mean that it is safe and effective. The fact of the matter is, some of the most popular natural weight loss aids can be dangerous and although they may produce fast weight loss at first, they can actually cause weight gain and difficulty losing weight in the long run.

The biggest problems are with the natural weight loss aids that contain stimulants. Natural weight loss aids that contain stimulants work very much like stimulant drugs, and they have the same risks.

Caffeine, kola nut, yerba mate, guarana, and ephedra (also known as ma huang) are the most common stimulants found in natural weight loss aids. All of these are very strong stimulants, and are similar in effect to drugs like amphetamines. Most people are aware that taking amphetamines can be dangerous, but they may be lulled into thinking the natural stimulants are safe for the sole reason that they are natural products.

It is strongly suggested that you not use any form of stimulant as a weight loss aid. This is for two reasons. First, stimulants, whether natural products or drugs, have the potential risks of stroke, high blood pressure, elevation of the heart rate, and sleep disorders. The second reason is that in spite of the fact that stimulants can increase metabolism and stimulate weight loss at first, in the long run they will likely cause you to gain weight.

In the beginning stages of stimulant use, there is an increase in the body’s production of adrenaline. Adrenaline is produced by the adrenal glands and is a hormone that increases heart rate, breathing rate, and blood pressure, essentially speeding up the normal functions of the body. An increase in adrenaline will speed up the metabolism and cause an increase in fat burning. These effects will only last for a short time though. In a matter of a few weeks, the body’s ability to produce adrenaline will become burned out, and as adrenaline levels start to fall off, the metabolic rate and fat burning will begin to slow down.

The fall in adrenaline levels is not the only problem, though. Stimulants cause the adrenals to produce another hormone in large quantities, called cortisol. Cortisol stimulates the body to store fat in the lower part of the abdomen and is a major stimulator of weight gain. The adrenal glands are able to produce high levels of cortisol for a much longer time than they are able to produce high levels of adrenaline. A first, the adrenaline production will overcome the fat-storing effects of cortisol and fast weight loss occurs. As time goes on, the elevated levels of cortisol will overwhelm the decreasing adrenaline effects, resulting in eventual weight gain.

Discontinuing the use of stimulants suddenly usually has the result of rapid weight gain, because the effects of cortisol will outlast the effects of the adrenaline. Whether or not stimulants are discontinued though, the eventual effect will be that adrenaline production will be exhausted long before cortisol production begins to fade, and sooner or later the effects of cortisol will win out and weight gain will result.

Even though the idea of fast weight loss through using natural weight loss aids that contain stimulants may be appealing, these products can only complicate your weight issues in the long term and may cause potentially serious damage to your overall health. Natural or not, weight loss aids that contain stimulants should be avoided.
